Since my brother is a young guy with some time on his hands between phases of his pilot training, he decided to take a road trip on his motorcycle from Florida to Colorado. He, and his very sore butt, got into town the night before last, so yesterday me and Mr. Curls met up with my brother and his girlfriend so Mr. Curls could meet my little brother.
We met up, grilled some hamburgers, and spent the afternoon hanging out. My brother and Mr. Curls hit it off right away. In part, because their personalities just work, and in part because my brother was way excited that he wasn't the only boy. In the past, there have been times where it's been me, my brother, and the girlfriend and she and I have ganged up on him. This time, my brother had another guy as backup.
See, my brother is ticklish. WAY ticklish. That makes it really hilarious when me and the girlfriend team up and attack him. He giggles in a distinctly girlish way when he gets tickled, and he flails helplessly about, which entertains me and the girlfriend to no end. Yesterday, there came a point when we were all sitting on the lawn outside and me and the girlfriend decided it was a good time to tackle my brother.
There I was, getting some good rib tickling in, when suddenly, I got blindsided by a sneak attack as Mr. Curls tickled me from behind. Ticklishness, like thick hair, is a trait my brother and I share. So, as soon as Mr. Curls came at me and exploited this weakness, I was out of commission, leaving my brother with much better odds. Mr. Curls scored major points with my brother for that and it pretty much cemented their alliance.
Mr. Curls has officially passed the brother test. Now the girlfriend and I have lost the two-against-one girl advantage. Tragic, I tell you. Tragic ;)
With the help of my friend Amanda, I got in touch with my girly side. Now comes the hard part.

The Small Town-ness Of It All
I didn't feel like going out last night, but I did it anyway 'cause that's how you avoid being a hermit, right? Besides, even though I went alone, I was bound to run into somebody. In fact, I ran into a few somebodies.
There was the regular who drinks scotch and soda tall - he's the father of a girl I used to be friends with in elementary school. There was the guy in the band who's married to a gal I met as an undergrad and work with now. There was the regular who tells me politically incorrect jokes that always make me giggle. The gal who does my hair was there for her boyfriend who's in the band. My bartender crush was there, too, as the sound guy for the band. Sadly, as far as I can tell, he doesn't even know I exist.
Then, too, there was the gossip. Politically incorrect guy is a couple years younger than me, Hispanic, and has the most gorgeous cheekbones you've ever seen. He's also one of the few people I've known who I'd describe as melancholy. He's got a girlfriend now - a cougar gal who's about a decade older than him.
Later on, while I was sitting with hairdresser gal and percussionist guy, a couple walked past.
HG: That dude is drunk.
PG: Very drunk. And that gal is Bartender guy's ex.
Of course, I couldn't keep my ears from perking up. There wasn't much else said, but a little while later, the ex went over to talk to Bartender guy. It's always strange seeing the second person in a couple after you've met the first. The gal's in her late twenties, blond, pretty and heavy set. It was a nice reminder, in a culture that's so obsessed with tiny gals, to see her next to skinny Bartender guy. Yeah, they're broken up, but you have to date somebody before they can become your ex. There was something there, once, and it wasn't there because she's a twig.
I didn't get a kiss to ring in the new year, but I did get a bit of champagne, some laughs, and a few hugs. Not too shabby, I think.

Social Butterfly Training
This past week I was hardly at home. I had extra shifts for the boring job and, on more than one night, went directly from my work shift to a Christmas party or whatnot. Good grief, talk about exhausting. It was a good, satisfying exhaustion, though. I met some new people and spent time with some folks I've known for a while.
Amanda was in town, and it was great to see her again. Though, I wouldn't have minded skipping the part where I met her and a friend of hers, a.k.a. ex-stripper gal, at a bar. Ex-stripper gal gets on my nerves. The two of them arrived first and when I joined them, this chick didn't so much as pause for breath, much less say "hello." She then spent the next fifteen minutes straight on a rant. She literally never slowed down enough for neither Amanda nor I to say, "uh huh," much less contribute to the conversation. In short, girlie is used to being the center of attention and has bad social skills.
Since she was so blatantly excluding me from the "conversation," (she wouldn't even look at me while she was monologuing), I took the opportunity to watch the room. There was a cute guy at a nearby table who I caught glancing at me, so I tried to practice making eye contact. It was a partial success - one small step for womankind, one giant leap for me. Then, since, Amanda is good at conversational judo, she gradually steered the night away from the one-woman show and toward actual interaction.
On another night, the gal who does my hair (got highlights this week!) invited me to see her boyfriend's band at none other than the bar where my crush works. Synchronicity, no? So, I saw Bartender Guy again and found out he's a smoker - no huge surprise there, he is a bartender after all - which is gross and dampens my crush. But, on the other hand, he wears button-up dress shirts, which is ever-so appealing, and who does that in my oh-so-casual city? So, even though the smoking is usually a deal-breaker for me, I'm staying open minded for now.
My crush on him is unusual and serendipitous, so I don't mind having it a while longer. It's interesting, if nothing else, because he's a blend of traits I'm attracted to - the dress shirts, being a bartender - and traits I'm not attracted to - the smoking, for instance, and I usually don't have strong physical attraction to skinny dudes. Also, there's the way he keeps popping up on my radar, even when I'm not stalking him ;) and how he's good friends with people I'm friends with, and it turns out he was even a senior at my high school when I was a freshman there. If anything, it's kind of strange we haven't bumped into each other before now.
On a side note, being formally introduced via hairdresser gal means he's now the 3rd bartender I know with the same name. That means, if my sampling is statistically valid, that approximately 25% of male bartenders in the world are named Dave.

Going Solo
I did my hair and went to the bar, arriving half way through the band's set. The friend who was maybe going to meet me didn't, but there were plenty other people there to talk to so I did plenty of, "hey how've you been" and catching up.
The cute bartender from the other night did show up, but just as a customer, so I didn't have an excuse to talk to him. Instead, I talked to everybody else I knew when I worked there and ended up sitting with one of my favorite couples in the world, they're super nice, really sweet to each other, and they met online, which is what I remind myself of every time I want to stop messing with the dating website. It was good to talk with them and everyone else and have an embarrassingly girly drink.
Now I have to get dressed and head off to my shift for the seasonal gig. I am so tired and all I want to do is go back to bed, but no rest for the weary, right? Despite the tiredness, I'm very glad I went out last night.

It's Like a Marathon or Something
It's been a long day. First class at eight a.m., after staying up late last night to finish grading, then it was off to the seasonal job until seven p.m. In a short while, I'm off to the bar to possibly meet up with a gal friend who probably won't show up. Part of me just wants to stay in tonight and watch TV 'cause I've got another long shift for the seasonal job tomorrow, then another Sunday, and I have a lot more grading to do over the weekend before my first Final at eight Monday morning. It's been a long week. I'm tired.
But.
But, my friend might make it to the bar. But, the cute bartender might be working. But, there might be a band. And the biggest "but" of all is that I really do need to spend more time around people other than students. So, I'm watching the Michael Buble music video again, then I'm taking a quick shower, doing my hair, and going to the bar to have a drink and maybe talk to people.

Closing Down the Bar
Last night I met up with a couple of friends I know from when I worked at the bar. One of them had her birthday yesterday, so we went out drinking. I was *this* close to not going because we were meeting at 10:00 p.m. and I'm a big wuss these days with teaching at 8:00 a.m. and all. But I thought about what Amanda would tell me to do and I did my hair, put on some makeup, and went out. It was a lot of fun.
We met at a bar I'd never been to before and it was crammed full of a young crowd. There were some cute guys and I tried not to avert my gaze as soon as I saw one looking my way. Gotta practice that whole eye contact thing, right? Well, let's just say I need more practice.
At around 11:30 we moved on to another bar which was a bit mellower. We immediately ran into a couple of other people we knew, which reminded me just how small this city can be. It was nice to goof off, good to catch up on some gossip, and I realized that this is what it's like to actually hang out with friends. One of the guys we ran into at the second bar called me a sex goddess, which was a change from my usual. He's a bit... well, let's just say I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, but, you know, I don't mind a compliment.
On a side note, I have a new crush. I have a weakness for bartenders. It's the fault of two men in particular who I worked with at the bar - both, alas, married. Both guys are charming, good looking, and warm hearted and they left an impression. So, at the second bar last night when I spotted the good looking, late 20s bartender, I knew what was going to happen. Of course, he knew the birthday girl. Turns out, he also knows one of the other gals, J. - a gal who used to bartend at the bar I used to work at. She's a part owner of the place now, and the cute bartender walked over to us at one point to talk about his shift at their next week. Since I had just been talking to J. about how I ought to swing by the bar soon, this seems like perfect timing.
Then, for the first time since I was a waitress two years ago, I shut down a bar. That's the first time in a very, very long time that I've gotten home so late. I'm tired this morning, and just about ready to leave for a shift with the seasonal job, so I'm regretting the lack of sleep. It was worth it though. Very worth it. I guess I'm not ready to resign myself to old lady status quite yet.

Highlights from the week
- Phone message from Amanda: "I want to let you know, because I think you'll enjoy this, that I'm sitting in a Chinese restaurant in my little town in Arkansas and they're playing country music on the stereo."
- Hearing M. do Karaoke for her Bday ('cause that's what she likes) and finding out that she's got a fantastic voice. Side note: Mr. B. also came and she's still got a mad crush and he's still not interested.
- Did a health assessment with my new personal trainer which included us going into a private room, me taking off my shirt, and her measuring body parts. This prompted...
- Me remarking to Amanda that, "In the past four months I've been groped twice, both times by middle aged women." (One was my doctor, the other my trainer.) She was quick to offer a pep talk, "That'd be great if you were a lesbian."
- More e-mails with Navy guy in which I realize that, on paper, he just might be a great guy for me. There's just that small problem of him being in Italy and me being in the US. Logistics are a bitch.
- Took myself on a date to see Zombieland yesterday. It was wonderful. I'm pretty sure I was the only female there who hadn't gotten dragged to the movie by their boyfriend/husband. Apparently Zombie movies aren't chick flicks. Who knew?

Odd Girl Out
I hung out with a group of writer friends last night. We met at a coffee shop/bookstore and, as always, had a lot of fun telling stories, talking about books and TV, and just generally enjoying each others' company.
Mid-way through, one of the new members of our group mentioned something about his girlfriend and I did a little head count. Of the four gals in attendance, two are married, and one is... well, she hasn't quite taken a vow of celibacy, but she's got some stuff in her past and there is no way any guy is getting near her that way any time in the foreseeable future, so she's unique in the headcount. Then there are the two guys, the afore-mentioned with a long-term girlfriend and the other one who's dating a gal with the same name as me. So, six people. Among them, I'm the only one who's single.
Yet another of those things where it looks like it's so easy, finding somebody. After all, everybody else I know has. Ah, perspective. I think I need more single friends.

A Night at the Bar
On Friday night, I stopped by the bar where I used to work. I caught up on the latest gossip. Sadly, there was little, and talked to the people I worked with. Skunk and Dave were behind the bar when I got there and Skunk gave me a hug. I'm not a real hug-y person, especially not when it comes to guys, but Skunk's an exception. He's a tough looking guy, built big, facial hair, crooked front teeth, but a real teddy bear.
I asked Skunk if he knew of any good cocktails with Goldshlagger in them and, after conferring with Dave, they came up with an oatmeal cookie for me. It was quite good. Depending on where I am and if I know the bartender, I like to experiment. My friend Julia is my favorite bartender and she likes to try new cocktails, so I usually ask her to give me whatever she thinks I'll like. Of course, if I'm at a new place, I know better - there's nothing bartenders/servers like less than to have a complete stranger ask, "What do you think I'll like?"
So, I'm sitting there sipping my cocktail and working on my laptop and I chat with a couple regulars I used to serve. Laura, one of my favorite waitresses to work with before I left, is on the floor. Since it's slow, I chat with her too.
Me: So, what's the news?
Laura: Well, JP (a regular) has a girlfriend now.
Me: That's cool, maybe he'll stop mooning over Sally (another regular) now.
Laura: Ha! Fat chance.
Me: How about you? Got any news on the man friend front?
Laura: Dave and Skunk are men, and they're my friends. Does that count?
Me: Nope.
Laura: I got nothing, then. You?
Me: Not really. There was a guy I saw a couple times, but I just wasn't feeling it.
Laura: I know how that goes. There was this guy, a friend of a friend, and I was totally in love with him for the longest time. Then we went on an actual date, and it was awful.
Me: That sucks.
Laura: It sure does.

Opening Night
I went to the opening of the little photo show tonight, and I wore a dress to it. It's a historic event, lemme tell ya, as the last time I wore a dress was about three years ago when I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and I wore the dress only as long as the ceremony lasted - by the time I was at the reception, I was back in pants.
Pre-show, I met up with my friend Deb to take photos for the website for a group we belong to. We hit the riverwalk and I have proof of my dress-wearing. Here's the "oil painting" version, which makes my eyes look like I'm possessed by a demon, a la Supernatural. But there you have it people, me in a dress.

The show reception was about what I expected, not a huge crowd and most of the people attending were members of the photo club. I liked being able to look at all the photos and say, "Oh, that's Don's photo. I know Don." That bit was cool.

F*ing Facebook Updates
I went to middle & high school with this gal and now we're on Facebook and she keeps posting these obnoxious updates about how sickeningly, disgustingly, puke-inducingly happy she is. Her husband is Mr. Absolutely-Wonderful and she's going to Hawaii for a week, blah, blah, friggin' blah. It's like nails on a chalkboard, except that chalkboard is my spine and it's giving me a nervous tick. See that? That was my eyelid spasming.
I had to "hide" her. It was either that or strangle her.

Cookies and Kids
Hung out with my friend Jenny yesterday and did some baking. Got to see her two kids, a 7 year old boy and 1 year old girl, which was awesome. I adore her son and was one of the first people to know about Jenny's pregnancy with her daughter. We were camping with a group of friends and, while everyone else went into a tent to get stoned, Jenny and I sat by the campfire playing cards. "I think I might be pregnant," Jenny said, pulling a card off the deck. "It's kind of early to tell, but I'm pretty sure."
Anyhow, we made a cake for her husband in honor of his birthday, did a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and played with the kids. It was great.
Her brother, who lives with them, came home mid-cookie-baking and sat in the kitchen with us. Yes, he's single and about my age. No, there's no way in hell I'd ever date him. To give you an idea of why not - he spoke loads of Spanish during the conversation just to show off, and he doesn't especially speak it well, but that damn sure wasn't going to stop him. Nothing stops him. Head like a brick wall. Totally obnoxious (and not at all in a cute, flirty way, just in a 'please shut him up' way). Ugh. Luckily, he works swing shift and went to bed before long.
The baked goods came out well, but that was secondary for me to sitting on the porch swing with the 7 year old in my lap, talking with Jenny and watching the little girl dance, with all the coordination of a drunk, on the deck.

Photo Weekends
This week, along with the chess club adventure, I checked out a photography club. It was cool and it's got me excited to take photos again - which is well timed as I'm about to go on an overnight trip which will offer plenty of picture-taking opportunities.
To keep me going with the pictures, I've decided to add some photos to the blog. Each weekend gets a new picture. Yay for photos!
This week's photo is a little over a year old and comes from a trip I took with my brother to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. This picture is of the balcony of the bar at the resort we stayed at. It was cool and overcast that day, with rain off and on. My favorite thing about this picture is the contrast of the colors. I also like the perspective.

I Am Such a Nerd
During my senior year of high school, I was a member of chess club. I went with my friend Jeremy (one of the tallest, loomiest guys I've ever known) and it was me, him, the student teacher who sponsored the club, and a handful of underclassmen boys. I was the worst chess player out of everyone, and probably only won maybe three games the whole time, but I didn't mind. Also, I was the only girl. I mentioned this to Army Guy once and he said, "You must have gotten hit on all the time." No, not really. I think it likely that the boys were scared by Jeremy (remember, big and looming).
Anyhow, this summer I'm making it my goal to find ways of getting out of the house and into the world more. Hard to make friends/meet guys when I'm home alone. So, I looked in the newspaper for what's going on this week. Last night, the town chess club had a meeting at a local coffee shop. Why not? I figured. Not that chess club is really a happening thing for young single guys, but it's something that interests me.
I went to the coffee shop, met the three people who showed up, played a game or two with each of them, got beat each time, and got kind of adopted by two hard-core players who told me some strategy and showed me a couple of maneuvers. It was fun.
Like my high school experience, I think I'll be the odd-man out. I was the youngest of the bunch by far, though Liz said last night was a small turn out, so it's hard to judge for sure. She also perked up at the idea of recruiting me as it'd mean having two females in the club vs. just her.
This so doesn't help me find single gal pals my own age, but it's a start at being less of a hermit.
